Hearing from our Buddy

Image
We got some photos emailed to us from our buddy.  They showed us that he had met some people from Hamilton Orthodontics. Harry the buddy went on a bike ride to get to work. He went to work with some exciting people. It was fun seeing Harry. We are writing some letters to Mark, which is the man in the photos. He was Haryy's carer for buddy day. We really liked the photos that Mark has sent to us we hope to see more photos with him and our buddy.  This is a photo of our buddy biking to work. We are sure Harry had a great time with all the people from the Hamilton Orthodontics.

It's Buddy Day Today!

Image
We decorated our buddy. We all wrote stories about him and choose his name. Then we recorded his story in his special diary. We combined stories from nearly the whole class to make his story.  Our buddy Nate joined in with our learning. We took him to our big slide. He really liked it. Buddy day is about raising awareness about children and their safety. You can find out more about it here . We hope our buddy Nate had a great day and we look forward to seeing what he did. We miss him. Our buddy Nate met Buddy Bud from Room 4. This is a photo of us before we said goodbye to Nate.

Floating a paper clip

This paper clip experiment is about water tension. Did you know water has a skin. You can break it. When we did a floating and sinking experiment the things that were heavier than water sunk and the things that were lighter floated.  Mrs Blair told us that she could make a paper clip float. We didn't believe her so we all tried it any way.  Some people made the paper clip float by putting it in gently then Mrs Blair showed us how she could do it. Here is a video of the way she did it. You could try this too. Post written by Sonia

Dry Paper Challenge

Image
We put a paper inside a cup. We pushed the tissue really hard. Then we held the bottom of the cup and put it in the water fast, we let it go. When you pull it out straight and don't do it crooked the tissue will stay dry. The tissue stays dry when you trap air in the cup.  Written by Josh, Kruze, Reydon and Jamie Can you do it at home?

Our class has been experimenting with Scratch . We click on try it out to make our animations. You can have a go too.

Farewell Mrs McLean

Image
Today we farewelled Mrs Mclean because it was  her last day. We gave her a plate with  our names on it. All of us gave her a huge hug. She is leaving Hamilton to live in Auckland. We will miss her. Mrs McLean was in our class every Thursday this year for half the day. We liked doing art with her. What did you like doing with Mrs McLean? Written by Josh

3d shape spotting by the Triangle Maths Group

Image
The group had to search around our classroom to find 3d shapes. They took photos using our iPad and then they put them into this picture for you using an app called Pic Collage. It was hard finding sphere's in our class.  Can you think of any objects that are the shape of a sphere?  Have you played the 3d shape games on our blog?

Operetta show

At the Operetta for Hamilton East School there were lots of performances. They were about money. We have posted our videos from our performance for you to watch and enjoy. We wanted to explain to everyone that money doesn't grow on trees and that it is made by machines.

Money doesn't grow on trees

Image
We are all performing in our school Operetta. We have been practicing every day. We will be performing next week. We will have three night shows and one matinee show. Next week we will need to come back to school at 6.45pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Here are some sneaky behind the scenes photos.... We have a full dress rehearsal tomorrow so we will come ready to participate.

3d shapes

Image
We have been learning about 3d shapes.  Sphere's are 3d circles and cube's are 3d squares. Triangular prism's have two triangles at the side and three rectangles to join them. This is a cube. It has 8 corners and 12 edges. They are all the same size. Pyramids have 5 corners and 8 edges. What do you know about 3d shapes? Where can you see them?

Money doesn't grow on trees; so what does?

Image
We were wondering why money doesn't grow on trees. Catherine and Robyn came to teach us about plants, trees and things that grow on trees.  They told us things that grow on trees. They showed us leaves, branches, flowers, bark, fruit, walnuts, lichen and fungi.  When we were exploring the things that grow on trees it felt like nature was flowing through us. We planted a kahikatia tree and sang the kahikatia song to bless our tree. We are excited to watch it grow and we talked about coming back to check on our tree in the future. We were told the kahikatia can grow to be very tall and strong. Even taller than our very own redwood tree. Do you know what grows on trees?

Welcome Te Mata School

Image
Our principal Pippa spoke to her daughter who teaches at Te Mata School and they agreed to come to our school for a visit. We had an amazing powhiri when Te Mata school arrived. We started off with waiata and then the Kapa Haka performed. We shared our mihi and some students from Te Mata shared their mihi too. We enjoyed listening to Te Mata sing a song to us. We are showing them what we do at Hamilton East School.
